Apparently that is a term for "bird-watchers" this is what James Anderson writes in his Travel in Europe Blog has to say about twitching in Belize:

Another glorious attraction for twitchers is Crooked Tree Sanctuary in Belize (on the west side of the Northern Highway at Mile 33), featuring 276 species of waterfowl, as well as Morelet's crocodile, black bowler monkeys and otters and all Belize's species of freshwater turtle. This mosaic of lagoons is partly surrounded by the largest continuous stand of logwood trees remaining in the country. Especially in the dry season, which peaks in April, double-crested cormorants, egrets, herons and various ducks can be seen. In November the jabiru stork, the largest bird in the Americas, may arrive to build stick nesting platforms and raise its young by June. Crooked Tree also hosts the peregrine, the world's fastest falcon, which is powerful enough to grab an adult coot right out of the water. The Sanctuary is open every day.

I could feel the surging joi de vivre as Ten Speed acer took me from before during and after this spectacular even. Imagine 140 mile bike race. Wowiee. Do check out his original account. If I'm still in the Americas in 2008 I'm definitely going to figure out how I can get right gear to get through customs and cheer the "V" team on. Hasta la vista, Ten Speed Racer."

Belize is attractive to English-only speakers in the US since Belize is officially an English speaking country. Masses in the US in general are still under the false impression that US dollars are worth something and in fact are worth a lot out side of the US. I appreciate what Kevin for publishing the words of Joe Bagent because it's indeed an eye opener. If someone from the US intends to live in Belize for an indefinite period of time and bring the trappings of his/her US lifestyle with him/her, then it indeed is going to cost because the lifestyle that is being imported is indeed foreign to Belize and therefore will be costly to maintain since the existing infrastructure doesn't support it cheaply

Term of Appointment: 07/25/2005 to present

From the US State Department of State (April 3, 2007)

Professor Robert J. Dieter, Ambassador to Belize, was confirmed by the Senate June 16, 2005. Prior to his Ambassadorial appointment, he was Clinical Professor of Law and Director of Clinical Programs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He joined the faculty of the CU School of Law in 1979 after spending several years as a deputy district attorney and in private practice. At the Law School, he focused his work in the Legal Aid and Defender Program and taught criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence and trial advocacy.

In 2003, President Bush appointed Ambassador Dieter to the board of the Legal Services Corporation, which funds 163 legal aid programs around the nation to help low-income Americans gain equal access to the judicial system. In 2000, Ambassador Dieter served as a Presidential Elector for the State of Colorado. In 1996, Ambassador Dieter published Colorado Criminal Practice and Procedure, a two-volume overview and analysis of state and federal criminal law in Colorado. A second edition was published in 2004.

Ambassador Dieter served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation in Washington, DC, and Chairman of its Finance Committee. He has served in various positions in the Colorado Bar, most recently as a member of the Executive Council, Criminal Law Section of the Colorado Bar Association and Co-chair of the Criminal Section of Boulder County Bar Association.

Ambassador Dieter received his law degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1972 and his B.A. from Yale University in 1968. He is married and has three children.

Belize is an English speaking country and probably over half of the population speaks an indigenous language. Spanish is also spoken. All formal schooling is done in English.

Weather is perfect and the place is teaming with wildlife. There is a new panther reserve, the first of it's kind in the world, if I'm not mistaken.

Fishing scuba snorkeling, sailing are all popular, obviously among the tourist and hopefully among the population at large.

Somehow relaxing in a hammock would be a bit of a challenge for me; I'm not accustomed to being a pea in a pod. I'd like to give it a shot none the less because this is a kind of bedding I can launder, carry, assemble and travel with solo if ned be.

Seems like ppublic schools in Belize are not serving the people very well...r maybe ther are. Depends how you look at it. Maybe we can do some tutoring while we're down there...sparks some fires and or maybe affect some positive change/contribution.

I'd be interested in attending a school and just see what the heck is going on! Can we use a chapter of one of your novels as our reader?

I mean some time between my pacing and your coolin' it in the lunge chair with book and shades (yeah the ht would have to be a baseball style cap for sun not the wide brim all around because the back of the chair would knock it off or something.)

Hi Dad I'm not sure if you checked out the pics of Belize at Flickr. The ones on this site to the left in the "sidebar" actually change as the collection of photos at Flickr, with tags matching the ones I selected, changes. I'm sure one of these sets of "badges" has the tag "Belize" Maybe another "Belize vacation" maybe another "Belize honeymoon" ... The onces in the posts themselves are exported from Flickr as a "Blog This" If I write something in the text box offered at flicker I believe I can get ''"wrap around text. 'm going to give it 10 minutes, to see if I can adjust the template for wrapping. I wonder what authors are writing in Belize these days and if there are any bird watchers. Everything is tropical...big cats and lots of reptiles ad colorful birds...Imagine a black bird with a read and yellow beak three times the size of Polly's. Wow. And in real like, not in National Geographic. .

An Introduction to Belize

Belize is found in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea northwest of Mexico and southwest of Guatemala.

History

Between 1500 BC and 900 AD, the Maya civilization occupied Belize. The first European settlers arrived only during the 16th century. British settlements started pouring in by 1638.

The name Belize is believed to be a derivation of the Spanish pronunciation of Wallace, who was the first pirate that established the first settlement in the land. Another possibility for the origin of the name may come from the Mayan word “belix” which means muddy water, pertaining to the Belize River.

In January of 1964, what was then still known as British Honduras became the first self-governing colony of the United Kingdom. It was in June of 1973 that the land was renamed to Belize. At this time, it was the only colony of the United Kingdom on American soil. In September of 1981, George Price led Belize to full independence, but this was delayed until 1992, because of a territorial dispute with Guatemala.

Up to this day, the territorial dispute between the two lands has not been resolved. Help for mediation has been sought from the United Kingdom. Record books have always stated that Guatemala tried to stake claims to the territory of Belize. Although the dispute has not been settled, both Guatemala and Belize have entered cooperative measures to help both countries progress.

Any trip to Belize starts fantasies of owning a beach villa, or a jungle resort. There are a lot of North Americans in this English speaking, former English colony.

Belize is known for its reef, the second largest in the world, and the fantastic diving that goes with it. Even beginner divers have heard of the Blue Hole, a famous diving spot. Ambergris Caye, "La Isla Bonita" in Madonna's song, is the main tourist spot.

Along with tourist shops and T-shirt shops, there are real estate shops on the dusty roads of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. Belize prices can range from as low as $5-10,000 for a beach lot in Corozal Town, a sleepy border town, to much higher prices for properties on Ambergris Caye. The southern resorts like Placencia are somewhere in between, price-wise.

There is lots of online assistance available. Gringos resell their properties, and locals sell to gringos, often through real estate agencies. You can contact a local real estate agency when you are in Belize, or simply scour the listings online.

If you keep in mind the old "buying swampland in Florida" tale, you'll realize that you simply MUST visit and see for yourself ANY property you buy. You'd take a $2,000 car for a test drive and kick the tires, wouldn't you? Then why would you make a $100,000 purchase, sight unseen?

Oftentimes the most important part of a purchase like this is YOUR enjoyment - you can buy purely for investment purposes, but will get an additional bonus of sunshine and relaxation if you LIKE the area, WANT to travel there, and VISIT your property to keep an eye on it or stay in it.

As more and more North Americans travel, and with the ease of getting to Belize, and its English speaking, safer roots - there will be more people looking to retire and visit Belize. This should be a continuously appreciating investment with good rental prospects, if you do your home work!
